A Mayo Fertilizer Company employee was killed Thursday morning when more than

2,000 pounds of granulated fertilizer fell on him as he worked, according to police reports.

Authorities have not released the man’s identity, pending notification of his next of kin. Officials confirmed, however, the man was 56 years old and lived in Hawthorne, a small town in Alachua County.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. at the Mayo Fertilizer Company, east of Lake City on McClousky Street.

The man was working in a bin at the facility when a stack of three industrial-sized bags of fertilizer fell over, broke open and trapped him underneath.

When co-workers found the man, they immediately attempted life-saving measures, but emergency medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene, reports say.

The body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Jacksonville for a complete

autopsy and cause of death.

The Mayo Fertilizer Company, as well as the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, have launched separate investigations into the incident.
