Two Coral Springs residents face drug-related charges after they were arrested Wednesday afternoon when they left a wreck scene, according to police reports.
Isacc Cruz, 28, and Shannon Lugo, 32, were arrested in connection with the incident.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to a wreck call on Interstate 75 around 9 a.m. where a 2008 Dodge truck driven by Cruz, with Lugo as his passenger, struck the rear of a trailer being towed by Donald Bartlett, 76, of Sanford, Mich.
Cruz and Lugo left the scene of the wreck and authorities issued a Be On the Look Out (BOLO) alert for the truck.
A security guard at the Lake City Wal-Mart heard the BOLO and saw a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description in the store’s parking lot.
FHP troopers and Lake City Police Department officers responded to the store, confirmed the truck was the suspect vehicle, and detained Cruz and Lugo, according to reports.
When police officers searched Cruz they reported finding $2,419 in cash and
an unlabeled pill bottle containing 12 methadone pills, 15 oxycodone pills and six alprazolam pills.
A search of Lugo’s purse revealed a small bag containing about 3 grams of marijuana, a bag of cocaine residue, rolling papers and keys to the vehicle. A separate bag containing cocaine residue was found in her pants pocket.
Cruz and Lugo were uncooperative and denied being involved in a crash and troopers noted Cruz also gave false information regarding his identity to FHP investigators. Authorities also accused him of being under the influence of illegal drugs.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit was called to the scene and the dog alerted to several areas on the truck. A search of the vehicle revealed cocaine residue in two separate containers, 15 bottles of illegal steroids were found in a box along with a small scale and several unused syringes, as well as a Glock 23 handgun.
Cruz was charged with possession of methadone, oxycodone, alprazolam, steroids, cocaine, drug paraphernalia, DUI, hit and run, obstruction of justice, driving while license suspended/revoked, careless driving and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Lugo was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and warrant: Violation of probation on original charge of theft.
Cruz and Lugo were taken to the Columbia County Jail.
