ORLANDO — The Lake City Reporter earned the Florida Media Organization of the Year Award from Special Olympics Florida during the group’s 2008 leadership conference on Friday.
The award honors one media outlet in the state each year that provides the best coverage and support of its local Special Olympics effort. The Lake City Reporter was selected as the best media organization in the state based on the news and sports stories written by staff writer Tony Britt and sports editor Tim Kirby and the photography of Jason Matthew Walker.
The award was presented in front of more than 500 Special Olympics
officials and volunteers during the group’s annual three-day leadership conference at The Florida Hotel in Orlando.
“We’re honored to accept this award,” said Editor Todd Wilson, who, along with Britt and Walker, attended the ceremony. “Among all the distinguished newspapers, radio and television media outlets from Key West to Pensacola, to be selected as the best in Florida by such a distinguished organization as Special Olympics is truly an honor.
“Tony, Tim and Jason all worked extensively to cover these events during the course of the past year,” Wilson said. “What we do in covering and supporting the local events of Special Olympics is a reflection of the achievements of all the coordinators, volunteers and athletes who are involved in Columbia County. These people all share in this honor that we bring home to North Florida.”
Special Olympics coordinators and volunteers from Columbia County, including John Brown, C.C. Wilson, Charlie Thomas, Keith Couey and Wade Burlingame all attended the awards ceremony and congratulated the Reporter staff members on the state award.
