A unanimous vote Wednesday by members of the Lake City Sesquicentennial Steering Committee assured that 900 copies of a fourth-grade coloring book will come to be.
The $2,990 project was awarded to Fort White resident Jennifer Chasteen. She is now commissioned to create a 12-page coloring book, with six to 10 illustrations and six pages of text. The tentative title of the coloring book is “The History of Lake City 1859-2009.”
The book is scheduled for distribution to the 740 fourth-grade students and some number of teachers during the year of celebration.
Marketing Subcommittee Chairman Nick Harwell announced there will be matted and framed prints of the Sesquicentennial logo given to gold, silver and bronze level sponsors. On the back, there will be an explanation of how artist Duffy Soto decided to use various representations in the artwork to show the history of the city once known as “Alligator” and then named “Lake City.”
There will be other prints of the logo made available to the general public, Harwell said, but they will not be matted and framed.
A number of special envelopes with the logo on its front will be postmarked with “Jan. 15, 2009” for collectors as well, Harwell said.
In other workshop news, the steering committee:
n Learned there will be cake served on Jan. 15, 2009, in Columbia County schools to recognize the kickoff of the year of celebration.
n Agreed to invite Gov. Charlie Crist to make a proclamation at the Jan. 15, 2009, kickoff event.
n Agreed to ask retired University of Florida professor Michael Gannon to be the keynote speaker. Gannon has written several books about Florida history and is a renowned Florida historian.
n Agreed to exchange exiting Lake City Reporter Publisher Michael Leonard for incoming Publisher Todd Wilson. Lake City Reporter Marketing Department Director Linda Strickand is recommended for replacing Leonard on the Publication Subcommittee and Lake City Reporter Internet-Technology Director Dave Kimler is recommended as Leonard’s replacement on the Events Subcommittee.
n Discussed the time capsule created in 1959, which would be opened at the kickoff event and remain open through 2009, until it is closed again with added items from the celebration of the city’s 150th anniversary. Care will be taken to preserve artifacts from deterioration due to exposure to the environment after being sealed away for 50 years.
