From the PGA Tour to the local level, golf has been associated with fundraising and charity events.
The Jacksonville Area Golf Association coordinates these efforts among 50 clubs in the North Florida area and Southern Oaks Golf Club is organizing a scholarship raffle to contribute to the JAGA fund.
The raffle has six prizes — golf for a foursome plus cart fees at Amelia Island Plantation, Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, Kinderlou Forest Country Club (Valdosta), Orange Park Country Club, Quail Heights Country Club and Southern Oaks.
There will be 1,000 tickets sold at $5 apiece or three for $10. The drawing will be prior to Aug. 1. Columbia High golf team members are helping with raffle sales.
Southern Oaks JAGA directors Howard Whitaker and Steve Lemley are spearheading the raffle, with proceed going to the JAGA scholarship fund. For raffle details and information on JAGA, call Whitaker at
752-1419 or Lemley at 752-3877.
“Over the years, JAGA has literally given well over a million dollars for scholarships,” Whitaker said. “Probably more have benefited from it at Lake City Community College than any other institution.”
JAGA was formed in 1954 and began its scholarship program in 1974. More than $1.3 million dollars have been awarded. The organization also has monthly meetings, where directors and guests play the various courses of the member clubs. It also sponsors several tournaments in the Jacksonville area.
Whitaker said he and Lemley have been the Southern Oaks directors for 15 years. The directors at Quail Heights are Jerry West and Joe Herring.
“JAGA has been with us for about 15 years and a lot of students get scholarships with us,” LCCC Golf Course Operations Chairman John Piersol said. “They used to just give scholarships to those who played golf, but they found out about our program and thought it would be great to give them to kids in the program. They have been with us for a long time. They are an excellent group and very
supportive.”
Lake City Community College Foundation Specialist Penny Faris
verified that since 1996 JAGA has contributed
more than $80,000 in scholarships to LCCC Golf Course Operation
students.
Columbia High graduate Ray Chamberlin currently is enrolled in the Golf Course Superintendent
program and has been aided by a JAGA
scholarship. He began receiving $1,500 per
semester this school
year.
“I am entering my
second year in the
program,” Chamberlin said on Tuesday. “I spoke
about it with Mr. Whitaker and it was a tremendous help to us. Our baby (Mara, who joined Juliana) is
two months old today
and it is hard for me to afford school right now.”
Chamberlin also gets
on-the-job training at Southern Oaks.
“It is a pleasure for
me to help generate funds and hear these kids when they come to the meetings and thank us,” Whitaker said. “I don’t think you could find a more worthy cause.”
