To kick off the Columbia County Public Library children’s summer reading program, Ronald McDonald, the famous burger-loving clown, will be reading and interacting with children ages 3 and older at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Columbia County Public Library Main branch.

Ronald’s visit is just one of four special programs scheduled for consecutive Tuesday mornings during the children’s summer reading program, the Whole Wide World @ Your Library — that will run through July 18.

“Each week the children will read and learn about a different continent, such as Australia,” said Beverly Schulz, outreach and youth services coordinator.

If you miss Ronald McDonald in June, he will appear at the Fort White Community Center on July 17, where he will read to, and interact with, children ages 3 and older.

In addition to Ronald McDonald, other performers who will appear at the library are juggler Ron Anglin on June 17; the Great Loudini Magic Show on June 24; and Lindsey Dank who will present Didgeridoo Down Under on July 1.

“The week we are in Australia, we will be making a didgeridoo,” Schulz said.

A didgeridoo is typically made from a branch or small trunk, from one of several Eucalyptus species, which has been naturally hollowed out by termites.

Didgeridoos are distinctive woodwind instruments, unique to Australian Aboriginal culture. Genuine didgeridoos are only found in northern parts of Australia.

The Lake City Main Library summer reading program also features several weekly programs scheduled Tuesday through Friday at the Main and West branches of the library.

Several of the weekly activities will take place at the Fort White Library and five special events will take place at the Fort White Community Center.

“The special events require a free ticket and they will be available at the library’s front desk one week before the special event,” Schulz said.

Schulz said the library’s main branch can accommodate up to 175 children for the special events.

“Most of the seating will be on quilts spread out on the floor,” Schulz said.

In addition to the four special Tuesday programs, weekly programs include a variety of activities for children of all ages beginning with Tweens (ages 10-13) at 2 p.m. every Tuesday in the main branch; the Terrific Two’s reading program (for 2-year-olds and their caregivers) is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesdays, also at the main branch; and Preschool Storytime (ages 3-4) is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesdays at the library.

At 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the School Age Story Hour (ages 5 and up) will be located at the main branch; and at 11 a.m. on Fridays it will be at the Fort White Library.

The Family Story Hour program (for all ages, with emphasis on pre-school children) is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursdays at the Columbia County Public Library West branch.

The Budding Artists program (arts and crafts for ages 5 and up) is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursdays in the west branch; and the Baby and Me program (babies 3 to 23 months and their caregivers) is scheduled for 11 a.m. Fridays in the main branch.

“We’re going to be offering a Budding Artists program at the west branch library, it’s an hour-long craft time that features the weekly continent theme,” said Stephanie Tyson, program specialist.
