A Suwannee County man faces burglary charges after police officers arrested him for allegedly attempting to break into both Baya Pharmacy establishments Wednesday night, Lake City Police Department reports say.
Jeffrey Allen Stanavich, 25, has been charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest without violence in connection with the incident.
A second suspect remains at-large.
Lake City Police Department Officer Larry Butler was on patrol when he heard an alarm and determined the sound was coming from Baya Pharmacy West, 1465 U.S. Highway 90 West, and went to the drug store.
While investigating the store alarm, Butler reported broken glass at the establishment’s drive-thru window as Sgt. Andy Miles responded to the scene and notified a key holder.
Officers Jason Golub and Joe Lucas went to Baya Pharmacy East, 780 SE Baya Drive, to check the business and saw a vehicle at the back side of the building.
The vehicle fled the scene, going around the back side of Baya Pointe Nursing Home where the vehicle’s two occupant fled on foot.
Golub and Lucas found the vehicle and a pair of gloves, as well as a black sweatshirt, on the front seat as they checked the vehicle, reports say.
As Butler and Miles watched the surveillance video from the Baya Pharmacy West store, they were able to see a suspect break the glass and see a man wearing a pair of orange gloves put his arm through the glass. The gloves matched the ones found in the car.
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Randy Harrison and his canine, Brutus, responded to the scene and were able to track and locate Stanavich, who was arrested and taken to the Columbia County Jail without incident.
Lake City Police Department public information officer Lt. Joe Moody said it took authorities about 45 minutes to find Stanavich, who they said ran into a wooded area east of the pharmacy.
Moody said additional arrests are expected in the case.
“The other suspect was not located, but they do have him identified,” Moody said.
