Barber wins FJT event in Gainesville
From staff reports
TAMPA — Lake City’s Blayne Barber fired a final round 3-under par 67 to win the Florida Junior Tour
16-18 age division event at the University of Florida Golf Course in Gainesville over Memorial Day weekend.
Barber, the 2006 Boys Junior Champion, posted a tournament total of 1-under par 209 to win his fifth career FJT title. Barber shot 72-70 in the first two rounds to trail the 36-hole leader by one stroke.
“I was playing really well,” Barber said. “I was hitting some good putts, but they just weren’t falling. I had to control my own game and keep playing as I was playing.”
After a 36 on the front nine, Barber was still one back. He recorded pars on holes 10-14 and made consecutive birdies on 15 and 16. After a 6-foot par putt on 17, Barber was 3 up.
On the uphill 18th hole, Barber holed his second shot from 170 yards for eagle.
“I didn’t know what to think,” he said. “I could just hear everyone going crazy.”
Barber finished the 54-hole event with the only under par total to win by five strokes.
Barber has signed to play golf at UCF and is looking to win a second Boys Junior Championship in July.
