Lake City Middle School art students donated $400 to Haven Hospice on Wednesday morning, the proceeds from which are from a self-published book containing student artwork, stories and poems about Florida.
More than 80 students participated in creating the 100-page “What I Love About Florida” book that contains dozens of poems, stories and artwork that depicts life in natural Florida. Because of the reception of the first printing of the book — which was self-published by the students and art club director Don Sloan — a second printing is in the works. The second edition, a professionally published copy of the book, will sell for $40. Sloan said organizers are seeking local sponsorship for the book and it will be published once enough pre-orders have been received.
Half of the proceeds from the sale of the second printing of the book also will go toward Haven Hospice.
The initial printing of the book raised $400 to be donated to Haven Hospice. The check donation from LCMS students to Haven Hospice officials took place Wednesday morning.
“This is the proudest day of my teaching career,” Sloan said.
The book came about as the evolution of a simple art project. The project soon extended outside of the art class, encompassing the school’s language arts classes as well, and eventually became the idea for a book to raise money for the art program and another outside charitable organization.
Sloan and assistant Pat Sinor gave the students a number of options to choose from, and the students chose Haven Hospice of the Suwannee Valley Care Center because of its personal ties to one of the school’s administrators. Assistant principal Sonya Knight’s father, Gene Cole, had recently passed away at Haven Hospice and students were able to see the grief caused by his death.
“What I Love About Florida” was dedicated to Cole and a copy of the book was presented to his wife at the ceremony on Wednesday.
Students had previously donated hand-carved linoleum artwork, taken from the book, to be hung at the center for the purpose of selling. The artwork at the center is available for sale, and half of the proceeds will return to the LCMS art department.
