Defending NJCAA champ Chipola captures state title.

As predicted a Panhandle Conference team won the FCCAA State Baseball Tournament at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven.
While Panhandle champion Pensacola Junior College was ranked No. 1 in the nation, it was runner-up Chipola College that stormed through the tournament to repeat as state champions. The Indians beat Manatee Community College, 6-0, in the championship game on Tuesday.
Chipola also is the
defending NJCAA champion and will again represent
the Gulf District at the
national tournament in
Grand Junction, Colo.
Chipola’s Ryan Chaffee and Manatee’s Scott Rembisz locked up in a pitching
duel with Chipola leading 1-0 after eight innings. The Indians blew the game open on a three-run home run by Carlos Moncrief off
Rembisz and a two-run shot
by Moises Montero off
reliever Josh Strawn.
Chaffee polished off a
four-hitter in which he struck out 17.
Chipola opened the
tournament with an
11-3 mercy win over
Seminole Community College.
The Indians then beat
St. Petersburg College,
8-7, in 10 innings and won its first meeting with Manatee, 13-9. Pensacola made it back through the loser’s bracket, before Chipola dispatched the Pirates, 10-2.
Lake City Community College catcher Roberto Perez was a first-team
All-FCCAA selection. Perez led the ’Wolves in hitting
and was fifth in the state
in home runs and 14th in RBIs.
Kelvin Clark was named to the second team. Clark was eighth in home runs and
12th in RBIs.
Orlando Bacon was sixth
in stolen bases and Jeff
Barfield was 10th in ERA.
