WINTER HAVEN — Lake City Community College kept coming and Pensacola Junior College proved it could take a punch.
The No. 1 team in the nation
overcame a 6-5 deficit in the sixth inning and went on to beat Lake City 9-6 in Friday’s opening round of the FCCAA State Baseball Tournament at Chain of Lakes Park.
Zach Prentice gave the Timberwolves the 6-5 lead with a home run out of the monster park, even for major-league standards. The former spring-training site for the Cleveland Indians is 340 feet down both foul lines.
Pensacola answered with a
four-spot in the bottom of the sixth inning, the second time in the game the Pirates came back from one-run down. Pensacola also scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning after Lake City scored one.
The ’Wolves could not have
started much better. Kelvin Clark led off the game with a double and Orlando Bacon singled him home. Roberto Perez followed with a
single to short left field but the
gamble to try and score Bacon came up short and Lake City had to settle for one run.
Lake City scored another run in the fourth inning with infield singles by Greg Blake and Emmanuel Morales and an error on a pick-off attempt. It was the first of three hits for Blake.
In the fifth inning, Clark walked and Bacon and Perez followed with base hits, the later driving in one run.
Bacon scored on a
ground-out by Blake as the ’Wolves pulled to within 5-4.
A double play erased Lake City’s final scoring threat when Blake and Chris Jones singled to lead off the seventh inning.
Caleb Strickland started and took the loss for Lake City. He went 51⁄3 innings with
10 hits, seven runs, three walks and eight strikeouts.
Casey Medlen finished up with two hits, two unearned runs, one walk and three strikeouts in 22⁄3 innings.
Robert Beary wore out the ’Wolves. The second baseman had four hits including a triple and two doubles and drove in three runs. Matt Taliercio had three hits and two RBIs.
R.J. Moye notched the win for the Pirates with 32⁄3 innings of scoreless relief. Miguel Mejia started for Pensacola and pitched into the sixth inning.
Lake City will play
Miami-Dade Community College at 1 p.m. today in an elimination game.
