The Columbia County Branch of the NAACP has a strong community foundation with its membership base grounded into the local grass roots level.

This weekend, the organization will celebrate its local success during The Columbia County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s 26th annual Freedom Fund Luncheon.

The luncheon has been scheduled for noon Saturday at the Olivet Missionary Baptist Church Banquet Room, at the intersection of Davis and Escambia streets.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased from any NAACP board member or officer. No tickets will be sold at the door. The event’s musical entertainment will be provided by Audré Washington and the duo of Alfonso Levy and Tony Buzzella.

Glynnell Presley, local NAACP Branch secretary, said the semi-formal affair is expected to accommodate at least 250 people, including several elected officials.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Derrick Johnson, president of the Mississippi State Conference of NAACP branches. Elected in 2004, Johnson is the youngest NAACP state president in the country.

He earned his Jurist Doctorate Degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas and Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss.

In February, Johnson was

elected to the NAACP national board of directors by the association’s board members. Additionally, Johnson was appointed by the chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court as a Commissioner to

the Mississippi Access to Justice Commission.

“Twenty-six years ago it was said that the local branch could not successfully house a luncheon, noon, on a Saturday in Lake City. But, here we are some 26 years later, bigger and better,” said John F. Mayo, president and CEO of the Columbia County NAACP branch.

The Freedom Fund Luncheon is the Branch’s annual fundraiser. All funds are used to operate the local organization.

“Contrary to popular belief, all officers and executive board members are volunteers. No one is paid,” Presley said.
