The Fort White High softball team played an entire district tournament in the comfortable confines of
their home field, but will
have to take to the road if they hope to keep rolling in the playoffs.
Interlachen High won
its second consecutive District 6-3A championship on Thursday night with a
6-4 defeat of Keystone Heights High, and will now host District 5-3A runner-up Fort White on Tuesday in the Region 2-3A quarterfinals.
After Thursday’s 1-0 loss to P.K. Yonge School in the
district title game, Fort White players said they were still ready for a playoff challenge.
“We just have to come out with the same intensity
we played with all week,”
Fort White senior Jordan Spires said after the Indians fell to the Blue Wave. “I think
we can keep playing this hard.”
Despite having to play a district champion, the Indians may have gotten a small break in facing the Rams. Keystone Heights fell three times in
the regular season to Interlachen, including a 15-1 rout.
But those rivalry games may be an exception for Interlachen, who is 10-12 overall and fell by only one or two runs in most of their losses. Their wins, though, have been dominant. The Rams have won by an average of nearly seven runs in each of their victories, including three mercy-rule wins.
The Indians enter the match up with a 16-8 overall record and a more consistent
scoring record, and proved they could compete with any team on their schedule with their 2-1 district tournament run, Fort White coach Frank Howell said.
“This team showed me that they were the first team in my three years as coach that really wanted to win,” the coach said. “They showed joy when they won a close game, and they showed the
disappointment of losing
a tough one. But I know I
can put them on the field with any team and they can play.”
