Lake City Volleyball Association’s 15-and-under team won the OVA Spring Fling two-day tournament last weekend in Orlando.
Lake City opened the month with a Gold Division Championship in Tallahassee on March 8.
In Saturday pool play for the OVA Spring Fling, Lake City opened with a 25-5, 25-7 win over Cape Coast. Orlando Volleyball Academy beat Lake City in game two 25-12, 23-25, 15-5. Lake City bounced back to beat Sarasota Volleyball Association 25-19, 25-19.
By finishing second in pool play, Lake City qualified for the championship round on Sunday.
Lake City began with O’Town, a team that beat LCVA at the Orlando Disney Classic in January. Lake City prevailed in three games
25-19, 14-25, 15-13.
“The girls were determined to make up for their loss against this team at the beginning of the season,” coach Teresa Sisco said. “They played with a common goal and it showed.”
Without a break, Lake City had to face Lake County Juniors Volleyball and squeaked out a 26-24, 25-23 win.
Facing a rematch against the host team in the championship match, Lake City won the first game 25-23. Orlando fought back to win game two, 25-22, and took a 12-2 lead in the tiebreaker game. Lake City fought back in the hostile arena and won 19-17.
“The tiebreaker was a game we will all always remember,” Sisco said. “The girls never gave up.”
Middle hitter Arden Sibbernsen led the team in service points, racking up 37 points, 13 aces, 15 kills and seven blocks.
Middle hitter Taylor Messer dominated the net with a total of 31 kills and 17 blocks. She also had 19 service points and 5 aces.
Setter Jessie Milton had 36 service points, 12 aces, six kills and four digs and setter Laurie Kirby had 28 service points, 16 aces, and four digs.
Outside hitter Haley Dicks had 15 service points, five aces, 17 kills, three blocks and a dig, and outside hitter Beth Williams had eight service points, five aces, 19 kills and four digs.
Outside hitter Taylor Owens had two kills, two service points and one ace, and defensive specialist Becca Mosely had five digs.
The Gold Division Championship was a 16’s tournament and Lake City promptly lost the first game 20-25, 17-25 to Tallahassee Volleyball Clubs.
Lake City had to win out to get a rematch and that meant three pool games and the semifinal matchup.
Lake City won them all and dominated Tallahassee 25-17, 25-13 in the championship match.
