When students in Bob Sloan’s art club and class at Lake City Middle School began a simple art project more than six months ago, it’s doubtful they had any inkling of how the project would evolve.

What began as a simple painting exercise using linoleum block prints soon encompassed poems and essays and turned into a self-published book, titled “What I Love About Florida,” a portion of the proceeds from which are being donated to the Haven Hospice of the Suwannee Valley Care Center

More than 80 students participated in creating the100-page book, which will soon see a second printing because of its popularity around Columbia County. The book contains dozens of poems and stories about what students like about Florida, and several pieces of art that depict the beauty of the state.

Sloan said the project initially was conceptualized by combining creative writing into his art lessons. He said he thought it would be fun to paint pictures of what students thought was interesting about the state within which they lived, but the project soon extended outside of his art class and into the school’s language arts classes. The idea was soon formed to create a book and sell it to raise money for the art program.

In October, Assistant Principal Sonya Knight lost her father, who had been treated at Haven Hospice, and students were able to witness the grief caused by death. Because of this, students approached Sloan about donating some of the money from the project to Haven Hospice.

While the class has not yet conducted an official ceremony to donate the funds, 54 LCMS students on Thursday presented Haven Hospice officials with hand-carved linoleum prints of the artwork seen in “What I Love About Florida.” The students signed the artwork, which will be framed and displayed on the walls of the end-of-life care center. Officials said the art would be for sale, and half of the proceeds from the sales will go back to the LCMS art department.

Students at Haven Hospice on Thursday were given a tour of the facility and also learned about the services offered by the care center. School Superintendent Grady “Sam” Markham was also in attendance to voice his appreciation for the job the students had done.

“There are very few students at your age able to accomplish something like this,” Markham told the students. “This facility plays a vital role in helping people through the difficult time of death.”

Sloan said many of the students involved in the project, in addition to being in his art class, also come before school for his art club projects.

“When you have kids that are wanting to come to you, you have kids that are wanting to unleash their talents,” Sloan said.
