Tigers stifle Rams
Columbia boys sink 11 3-pointers for
61-40 win Thursday.
From staff reports
The Columbia High boys varsity basketball team
traveled to Gainesville to
play Eastside High on Thursday, but shot
so well from far away that
they might have been
able to win from the county line.
The Tigers hit 11 3-pointers and added a stifling defensive effort for a 61-40 win over the Rams.
Columbia held a 15-12 lead after one quarter and went to halftime ahead 38-30 before allowing only 10 points in the entire second half.
“We’re just playing great half-court defense,” CHS coach Trey Hosford said. “On Friday (against Raines High), we gave up 72 points and the coaches told our guys that we weren’t doing enough as coaches. We were letting them get away with mental mistakes on defense. We told them
we could do a better job as
coaches.
“The kids really bought
into that and they’ve been
practicing harder and playing a lot better defense.”
Kenny Williams led the Tigers with 23 points — 15 from 3-pointers — and Cameron Reynolds scored
19 points (12 from 3-pointers) in only his second game back from injury.
Dont’ae Davis scored
11 points (six from 3-point
territory), and Ryan Bell and Julio Viens each scored two points.
“We missed our first three looks of the night, but once we settled in, all our shots started to fall,” Hosford said. “Eleven 3s is a big deal, and we did what we wanted to do when he held them to only 10 points in the second half.”
Columbia is now 10-7 (5-2 District 4-5A) and next plays at Leesburg High at 7 p.m. on Saturday (junior varsity at 5:30 p.m.).
Fort White wrestling
Fort White High wrestler Robert Hartley set a
school record with a 7-second
pin in the heavyweight class and the Indians captured
nine other opponents to take
a 66-24 team victory over
visiting Kissimmee Christian Academy on Thursday in
Fort White.
Chance Hays (112), Katlynn Cormier (125), Richard Brown (130), John Gellert (135), Chris Waites (140), Chad Stinnett (152), Tyler Howard (171), Jerry Stringfellow (189), Dylan Manship (215) and Hartley all captured pin fall wins for Fort White.
Cormier usually wrestles in the 125 weight class, but moved up to wrestle a female wrestler from Kissimmee.
“We looked pretty good,
and I saw a lot of good things,” Fort White coach Jason Howard said. “There were
a few things we need to
work on, but every wrestled well.”
The Indians improved to
6-3-1 overall and next wrestle at Suwannee High on Friday and Saturday.
Columbia wrestling
Columbia High’s wrestling team pulled out a 34-33 win over host Palatka High on Wednesday to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Jeff Kennedy (135) won an 11-5 decision, Josh Hook (140) won 16-4, and Ronnie Frost (152) won 18-13.

double forfeit at 103 pounds.
Chad Vercher (189) was pinned and Ashley Crumitie (112) lost an 11-6 decision. The Tigers forfeited at
119, 130, 215 and 285.
The Tigers will compete in the Billy Saylor Invitational at Suwannee High at 5 p.m., today, and 9:30 a.m.,

Fort White soccer
The Fort White girls varsity soccer team suffered a pair of losses early this week, but that did not hurt the Indians’ shot at a playoff berth.
Fort White fell 3-1 at St. Francis Catholic High on Monday and lost 8-0 with about a minute to play at
Santa Fe High on Tuesday.
Rebecca Onorati scored on a penalty kick for Fort White against St. Francis.
The Indians are now 4-12-1 entering Tuesday’s District
3-3A tournament at P.K. Yonge School as the No. 2 seed.
Fort White will play Newberry High in the
opening round, and the Indians defeated the Panthers 5-1 and 3-0 this season.
