With just more than two weeks until the general election, Columbia County has its equipment under lock and key.
The county Supervisor of Elections' Office performed "logic and accuracy" tests on all voting machines Wednesday morning.
The process took about an hour, said Carolyn Kirby, supervisor of elections in Columbia County. Officials tested the machines for proper ballot readings and voting accuracy before sealing them in an interior room with self-locking doors. The machines now await delivery to the county's 25 precincts on election day.
"The security is high," Kirby said. "It's a big thing. We just want to be sure that we document and audit to make sure everything that we do is above reproach."
All of the machines are delivered to the precincts under lock and key and are returned to the elections office in the same manner, she added.
Her office, she said, is just as concerned about having informed voters as it is about security.
If people have any questions or concerns regarding the local voting process or need help with address changes, she encouraged them to call the elections office at 758-1026.
"We encourage them to get it first-hand from the people who do elections," she said.
Though there have been voting problems in recent years elsewhere in Florida, Kirby said if each county were evaluated individually, Columbia County comes out with "good grades."
"I feel like Columbia County knows how to vote and pays attention," she said.
Early voting at the elections office will begin Monday and allows any registered voter to vote in the same way they would at their precinct. Early voting ends on Nov. 1.
